Miriam
Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago startled her family and neighbors Sunday morning when, from out of the blue, she started calling out to “Basilio” and “Crispin” in the garden of their Quezon City residence.
“Basilio? Crispin? Where are you two?” she was overheard shouting to no one in particular.
“Basilio! Crispin! Show yourselves, you lowly insects! Basilio! Crispin! Must I shout my lungs out just to call you to my side? As a senator of the Republic, I demand that you appear before me now lest I find myself tempted to give you a thorough whipping for not listening to me, you fungus-faced nincompoops! Basilio! Crispin! I demand that you show yourselves now! Basilio! Crispin!”
With her right hand shading her eyes from the sun, Santiago stalked the garden and searched everywhere for “Basilio” and “Crispin.”
At one point she even looked under a rock, eyewitnesses said.
The Santiago household was alarmed.
“Akala namin natuluyan na si Ma’am (we thought Ma’am had lost it),” a member of the household staff, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Good Times Manila.
One of Santiago’s children tried to take her hand to guide her back to the house but the feisty senator just pushed him away.
“Go away. I’m looking for Basilio and Crispin,” she said. Then she continued shouting: “Basilio..! Crispin..! Basilio..! Crispin..! Basilio..! Crispin..!”
“Nag-iiyakan na po sina Sir pati yung mga bata. Pinapanood lang namin si Ma’am na parang nababaliw na (Sir and the children started crying. We were just watching Ma’am act like she was crazy),” the house helper said.
But to everyone’s surprise, two teenage boys suddenly appeared and approached Santiago.
It turned out that the senator had hired the youngsters, named “Basilio” and “Crispin” after the memorable characters from Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, to pull out weeds on the lawn.
The house helper said: “Lahat po kami nakahinga ng maluwag. Hindi pa naman pala nababaliw si Ma’am (We all heaved a sigh of relief. It seemed Ma’am had not yet gone insane).”

There is no basis whatsoever on the allegations that the honorable senator is loosing her marbles! Kalokohan ang balitang iyan. Those malicious kibitzers with puny little brains should be punished for spreading unfounded rumors regarding the Senator. They’re just jealous of her Harvard degree.
Just because she was looking for her gardeners and the gnomes that accompany them doesn’t mean that she’s crazy.
